World Mission Sunday 2012 (WMS ’12)

We will celebrate WMS ’12 on 21 October 2012.

Pope Benedict XVI’s message for WMS ‘12’s theme is “Called to Radiate the Word of Truth”  (Apostolic Letter “Porta Fidei”, n. 6)

He said the celebration this year has a special meaning because the “50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and of the opening of the Year of Faith and of the Synod of Bishops on the theme of the New Evangelization contribute to reaffirming the Church’s desire to engage with greater courage and zeal the ‘missio ad gentes’’ so that the Gospel may reach all the ends of the earth” (Jan. 6, 2012).

In his Apostolic Letter “Porta Fidei” Pope Benedict, wrote: “Today as in the past he sends us through the bishops of the world to proclaim his Gospel to all the people of the earth” (n. 7).

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines declared 2012 as the “Year of the Pontifical Mission Societies” (PMS) which is celebrating its 80th anniversary in the Philippines.

On 21 October  2012 Pedro Calungsod will be canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.  Blessed John Paul II beatified him on 05 March 2000.

Pedro Calungsod was born around 1655 somewhere in the Visayas, probably in Cebu.  He was killed in Guam in 1672 with Fr. (Bl.) Diego Luis San Victores, S.J. where he worked as a Missionary.

Let us actively respond to Christ’s command: “Go, then, to all the peoples everywhere and make them my disciples, baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And I will be with you always, to the end of the age” (Mt. 28: 19-20.  MTBO Bible/Good News Bible).  Here, we have the three essential dimensions of faith: believing (creed), obeying (commandments/code) and entrusting (Sacraments/Cult and Our Father).

Prayers, sacrifices and money for the mission.
